Dowel joint

 

A  dowel joint is used to reinforce butt joints in furniture.  Dowel joints are popular in chairs, cabinets, panels and tabletops. 

 

 

Dowels are also used to assist with alignment when gluing edge to edge joints.

 

Corresponding holes are  drilled with the assistance of adowelling jig. It is vital  that members line up perfectly in the completed joint.  The holes and dowels are covered in glue and the joint is clamped until set.
